FRIENDLY REMINDER: IT'S FAWN SEASON ON GABRIOLA! During May and June it is likely you will see newborn and baby fawns on Gabriola. Please LEASH YOUR DOGS and make sure they are under your control. Dogs kill fawns every year on Gabriola. Not only is it sad when this happens it is against the law. Please keep your dogs on a leash and under your control especially during fawn season. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the Wildlife Protection Act. Thank you for your consideration of our wildlife on beautiful Gabriola.
WILDLIFE PROTECTION ACT:
Deer chasing by dogs is against the law. Persons who allow a dog to chase wildlife, contrary to the regulations of the Wildlife Act, are subject to a fine of up to $1000 or imprisonment for up to six months (Wildlife Act, Section 80).
Dogs may be killed by a Conservation Officer or Peace Officer, if they are at large in a wildlife management area, or if they are running at large and harassing wildlife (Wildlife Act, Section 81).
